Mother of Pearl – also known as nacre - is the natural iridescent lining of the inside of mollusc shells. It is the same substance that forms pearls.
Molluscs produce nacre to protect themselves from parasites and irritants. It consists of inorganic platelets of aragonite (calcium carbonate) arranged in layers separated by sheets of organic proteins. This combination of materials makes nacre both tough and soft at the same time. The iridescence is caused by the interference and reflection of light through the layers.
